House of Statistics at Alexanderplatz in Berlin

The House of Statistics was built between 1968 and 1970 according to the plans of the architectural collective P. Senf, M. Hörner and J. Härter. The office building with nine to eleven floors was the headquarters of the Central State Administration for Statistics and provided space on the ground floor for the ‘Jagdklause’ and ‘Mocca-Eck’ restaurants, a shop for hunting and fishing equipment and the ‘Natascha’ shop, which sold products from the UdSSR.

After reunification, both the Berlin branch of the Federal Statistical Office and the Office of the Federal Commissioner for the Records of the State Security Service of the former German Democratic Republic were housed here. Both authorities left the building by 2008. Since then, the former House of Statistics has stood empty.

In 2015, the ‘Haus der Statistik’ initiative prevented the planned sale and demolition of the building by investors. Instead, the state of Berlin took over the site from the Bundesanstalt für Immobilienaufgaben (BImA) in 2017 to develop a model project for the common good. The aim was to create a mixed-use, long-term affordable urban neighbourhood with a combination of housing, administration, art, culture, education, social services and integration.

The future use is being planned by the ‘Koop5’ joint venture, consisting of: Senate Department for Urban Development and Housing, Mitte district, ZUsammenKUNFT Berlin eG cooperative, BIM Berliner Immobilienmanagement, Wohnungsbaugesellschaft Berlin-Mitte mbH (WBM).

Berlin-based architects de+ architekten gmbh won the open competition for the realisation of the project in 2018. The design envisages the modern restoration of the façade and adds the ‘Ark’ to the building - a new structure along Otto-Braun-Straße with a green façade and a public roof garden.

Around 1,000 HAFI lever handles of design 203 can be found in the ‘House of Statistics’.
